Calling for a shake-up of the global financial order, Germany's chancellor
suggested at the World Economic Forum in Davos that a UN Economic Council
may be needed to tackle global economic problems.
Pointing out that
cooperation among international financial institutions has failed to protect
the world against the worst financial crisis in decades, German Chancellor
Angela Merkel called for the forging of a new charter.
"This may even lead to a UN
Economic Council, just as the Security Council was created after World War
II," she told the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Switzerland.
