Sept
26, 07. Thousands of Buddhist monks and other protesters have been marching in
Rangoon despite warnings, and a bloody crackdown by police. For the third day,
an estimated 100,000+ demonstrators took to the streets.
Troops responded by
firing tear gas and live rounds over the protesters' heads, sending people
running for cover.
A clampdown on the
media by Burma's military government has banned gatherings of five people or
more, and imposed a night-time curfew.
The
police have now begun a crackdown. At least 100 monks were beaten, and three
deaths have been reported.
Demonstrators were
dragged away in trucks. Opposition leaders have been arrested.
There are now fears
of extreme action by the military government. |
